    GLOBAL WARMING! (On Mars)

I have to thank Patrick for digging up this article. (here)

It seems that the polar ice caps are shrinking, a key sign of global warming. Reversing the process will be extremely expensive and require technology not yet invented. The situation is especially difficult because the polar ice caps in question are on MARS!

Please share this story with your favorite environut. Ask them to explain why the climate on Mars is changing, then turn the argument around. Use the same reasoning applied to global warming on Earth, and enjoy the hand waving explosion! "NO! NO! NO! Earth and Mars have nothing in common! You can't equate... BLAH BLAH BLAH!" It'll look like someone set off a high-powered, area-effect, blame grenade. Most environuts have one of these devices implanted at birth.

HINT: Earth and Mars do have something in common. It's a giant nuclear furnace in the center of the solar system. It may be tough to spot, because the sun usually blocks it out. This furnace provides almost all of the heat for the solar system. Its output varies over time, which effects the climates on all the planets of the solar system. Small changes have a huge impact because energy from radiation is one of those fancy "relationship squared" functions. The orbits and tilts of the planets also effect how much of the radiation they are able to absorb. For example: when the northern hemisphere of Earth is tilted toward the sun in summer Wisconsin absorbs more radiation. The effect is that our sledding hills turn brown. Mars is either seeing the effect of its changing orbit, or the changing output of the nuclear furnace. Since the trend on Mars matches a trend on Earth, it is possible (unless you're an environut) that both are experiencing an increased dose of radiation.

    You just don't get it!
    Mars was Happy.
    Cold but happy.
    Then came pathfinder....
    Harmless little spacecraft you say.
    I think not!
The little radiation that the Red planet was receiving for eons was gleefully reflected back into space by the red Martian dust.
NOW it is being reflected off of the shiny metal spacecraft melting the Ice caps.
Now what have we got? Martian global warming. WHo can we blame?
It's those pesky JPL guys in Pasadena I say.
    ;-)

No. I think the real answer is that our depleted ozone layer is allowing more radiation to pass through to Mars.

In fact, we could be warming the entire universe...

    Dear God! Where's my suncreen?
