How Could I Survive Without My ID?

I was once again reminded this weekend how RIDICULOUS the arguments against a voter ID bill are. Denying poor people the right to vote? How about denying them the right to treat a nasty flu or light up a cigarette?

I caught a nasty throat and sinus bug this weekend. Seeing that I was outside the whole time, I went to the local apothecary to get drugged up. Something I purchased had pseudoephedrine in it, and it raised the red flag on the cash register.

This wasn't the first time I've been carded for trying to cure a cold. Before the Talkstar competition, I caught a nasty bug. The Jones Island flu, I think. This thing had me running a fever and probably praying to several deities in my sleep. So, I headed out in search of a knock-me-out cocktail. I tried to purchase Nyquil, DayQuil, and Theraflu and was denied at the register. The clerk told me that I could only purchase two of the items, because the register wouldn't let him ring up three. On the way out of the store, I realized that they sold Dayquil/Nyquil COMBO PACKS!

I guess the problem with pseudophed is that people use it to make crystal meth. But, I also hear it takes gallons of cold medicine to make it. Would you pay for a couple thousand over the counter pills to make your meth? I think not. I think the pseudophed ID bill should require that you present an ID when you STEAL pseudophed. That would be more useful.

By the way, you need an ID for the following in Wisconsin (Milwaukee):
    Buying alcohol
    Buying cigarettes
Buying a butane lighter (in some stores)
    Buying spray paint

    Buying permanent markers
    Buying cough syrup
    Driving a car
    Buying a gun
    Writing a check

    Getting on an airplane
    Collecting a WIC check
Entering almost any legal contract (buying a house, renting property, going to court, etc.)

You still don't need it to vote, though. Yippie! Hooray for civil liberties!

If protecting the rights of the poor is truly the noble cause we're defending by blocking voter IDs, we should abolish the ID requirements for all of the above items. Why should poor people without IDs be denied the right to drink, smoke, own guns, buy spray paint, write checks, or own property? When the democrats propose the removal of ALL ID requirements, then I'll buy this "protecting people's rights" horse-hockey. Until then, they're blowing smoke.
