The Honeymoon is Over
Lazer 103 recently changed formats, supposedly. They also changed names and on-air staff, almost.
The major difference that I noticed right away was that they were still playing Metallica and they'd quit playing Nirvana. Well, my dream of a Nirvana free rock station has suffered a more tragic death than Kurt Cobain. A few weeks ago, I heard Teen Spirit, or Heart Shaped Box, or... Whatever, never mind.
Most of the songs played on "The Hog" now were already on the original Lazer play list. They're just playing more of the "classic" stuff now. Have I become that old? Is the music I grew up on "classic rock" or "oldies?"
What was the point of firing all the on-air staff? If this was supposed to be a bold move to eliminate all memory of WLZR, they overlooked the morning show. With Bob and Brian doing mornings, this station will always remind people of Lazer 103.
This change should could have and should have happened under our noses. They could've easily changed the play list without making a scene. The only on-air staff that needed to go were the evening stoner jocks. And finally, they needed to drop all the lame weekend programming: Hard Drive, Lazer Local Licks, etc. It all sounded like filler. The reason they made such a dramatic change was to call attention to themselves. The buzz in Milwaukee radio is that The Brew has murdered the ratings for everyone else. Some are eyeing WKTI as the next victim.
By the way, the new Bob and Brian album goes on sale today! The web site has a package with the past four or five years' albums.

15 Amendments:
The BREW has killed everyone else's ratings because they ROCK!
Can I take a guess which media outlet you work for? :)
Go for it...I won't promise I'll give an answer ;-)
I'll go with ClearChannel.
That's what I was thinking, Steve.
More specifically, what are the odds she's a news/traffic babe on the BREW? :)
Are we close, Belle?
As much as I wish I was a news/traffic babe on the BREW...alas, it is not true.
So, it's a debate you want then?
I actually think it's been all down hill for the BREW since they ended their opening salvo of non-stop music for a month. That was AWESOME!
I'm pretty open minded to music: except for hip-hop and country. There are even a few bands in each of those categories that I'll use as backround. Basically, I just want music that doesn't piss me off.
With 94.1 (Madison), 94.5, 102.1, 102.9, 97.3, and a floater programmed in on my car radio, why do I only ever seem to hear commercials??? I ought to be able to frequency hop and find SOMETHING!
Two words for all of you,
IPOD coupled with ITRIP
death to all program directors :)
gbfan--you and all your techie gadgets -- tivo, ipod with itrip, etc...
I just love 80's rock...it's a li'l piece of heaven...
Personally... my dial is usually tuned to 102.1. The Brew never really interested me that much. Of course... I actually used to listen to The Point if any of you remember that station before they went classical on that frequency. Go figure.

WXPT. Yup, I remember it. You and I were in their target age group. Interestingly, that was also a Lakefront Communications experiment.
They used a lot of the LAZER jocks, but changed their names. As if no one would notice that Deb Stuart and Liz Borden sounded the same... Did Carrie Wendt change her name, too?
The best days for Milwaukee rock radio listeners were when we had WLUM, WLZR, and WQFM playing the hard stuff.
I can't believe the jazz format is keeping 93.3 afloat. This is too far north of Chicago, isn't it? Are they still jazz? I haven't even checked lately.

You know, I've tried the mix-your-own method before. I invested WAY too much time in putting together a playlist, burning CDs, and copying files.
I'm too lazy for all of that, I guess. I just want to flip the switch.
Satellite radio, then?
Satellite radio, then?
A monthly fee, to listen to music in my car? Do I look like a sucker?
I'm about to tell Time-Warner what I think of this lame digital cable service, too. I think I feel another blog coming on. :)
