Predator Hunting Update
I sent out a "feeler" email, to gauge the response I would get for a blogger action against internet predators. Honestly, I expected to be ignored for a while and eventually turned away. Instead, Nikki at U.S. Cyberwatch responded right away. She was stand-offish at first, but informative. Once I made my intentions clear, we had a rapid exchange that left me feeling really good about this idea. You can read some of her response here.
To summarize the exchange so far: U.S. Cyberwatch is happy to have our attention, and they would be glad to accept our help. Actually cruising chat rooms to nab predators isn't for the faint of heart. It's stressful and sometimes the bad guys get away. Anyone this involved would also need to be able to pass a background check and be available to testify. Nikki doesn't recommend it as a newbie activity.
There are plenty of other tasks to be done, like: research, education, follow-up, and networking. U.S. Cyberwatch seems more than willing to accept volunteers for these tasks. I will be working with them to determine how we can organize the blogging community to help.
I'm pleased to see that I've already generated interest at Badger Blogger, Texas Hold 'Em Blogger, and Ask Me Later. Other interested parties should contact me via the email address in my profile.
