Wigderson on the Air
No live blogging this time. It's too hard to concentrate.
James handled himself well on the radio today, considering the fact that he knowingly walked into a buzz saw. He took a number of shots from callers and the hosts. The callers really seemed to want to label him a racist for not wanting to spend time on the north side.
I kept thinking I should call, and realized each time that I didn't have the number. Sorry, James, I was in and out and I never caught it! I wanted to hear the hosts tell me that I SHOULD feel safe on the north side. Whenever I travel those neighborhoods I feel exposed and more to the point, unwanted. Who would hang around in that situation? You aren't going to convince me that the people who do live on the north side prefer to be there, either.
The problem is not a racial issue. I've been plenty of places that scare me, without ever seeing any of the neighborhood residents. East Peoria would be a good example of such a place. I wanted to get the heck out of there and I never saw a single person, nor have I any knowledge of who or what lives there. As far as I know, Gary, Indiana is a ghost town and I won't go there either. Don't call me a racist. I know where I'm not welcome.

There's someplace you ARE welcome?
This comment from the guy who said he has a blog-crush on me... :)
How far north are we talking? I used to live on 95th & Brown deer in a place called the North Meadows that place was bad!!
On the SITE!
I said I had a blog-crush on the SITE!
You sick, sick little man.
How far north are we talking?
Pretty much anything north of I-94 and west of the river is outside my territory. It's funny, because one caller mentioned Farwell Ave. That's east of the river, and well into Milwaukee's "fashionable" east side.
I don't much care for Cudahy either, and them folks is white.
James did a nice job considering he had two professional talkers that wouldn't allow him to finish a thought.
It's really not just the North side either. The South side is in close contention for some pretty shady rat holes you won't want to be caught in.
I've seen some bad, bad things in my short life. And while most of them took place in the house I lived in, there were a few things I bore witness to that will forever be burned in my memory.Bottom line, never find youself somewhere you don't understand the language, culture, bus routes, or gang associations. Because the danger will surely find u.
The neighborhood was so tough ... how tough was it? ... it was so tough I asked a cop how long a walk it was to the bus stop, he said "I don't know, no one's ever made it."
Well, Aaron, just knowing you were there with me in spirit really helped. After the first caller that told me to get my "ass back to Waukesha" I began to feel really welcome. I'm still laughing about it.
You can call me Peter if you like, James.
It looks like I'm going to need a new identity soon.
