    Ok, What Gives?

SteveEgg notes that gas prices in the Milwaukee area have dropped below the rest of the state. Having driven all the way up to Ontanogon, MI this past week I can tell you that he's noticed something significant. And, I think he's right. Jim Doyle deserves some of the blame for higher prices throughout the state, not credit for lowering prices in Milwaukee.

Gas prices along my drive were typically around $2.50/gallon. In Ontonogon, they were closer to $2.60. Yet, in Iron Mountian unleaded regular was selling for $2.14 at more than one gas station! Iron Mountian is not in Canada. This was $2.14US per gallon.

So, what gives? Why such a difference, and only in one city? Has Iron Mountian tapped it's own oil field? Or, are they mixing pasty filling into the gasoline?

Two differences between Michigan gas and Wisconsin gas; no 9.18% minimum markup law, and lower gas taxes (though they do put a sales tax on top of everthing except the state gas tax).

Stopped off in East Troy on the way back from the shootout (where were you?) for some non-Corn-a-Hole gas, and that was at $2.299/gallon. It's $2.189 around my neck of the woods. That's not a lack of competition (3 gas stations at Hwy 20 and I-43), and I doubt it's a lack of fresh gas (diesel at the Road Ranger was at $2.539, about the cheapest around).
