Sean Hackbarth Sounds Off on Blog Summit II
March 23rd, 2007-1:04 pm by sub2changeSean Hackbarth is suggesting that Wispolitics wasn’t reading the feedback following Blog Summit #1. In particular, Sean says they are repeating a mistake that they made last year by packing the panel with media bloggers and very few of us commoners.
Since we’re about to go another round in the debate over what makes a “real blogger,” I do have some grievances to air. I have no problem with big media hosting blogs. It shows that they’re recognizing this tool. I just wish that they wouldn’t play it so safe. They use their big name personalities to generate traffic and they put tight controls (tight in blogging terms, where virtually anything is fair game) on content in order to avoid lawsuits. Why not recruit some lesser-knowns, give them some tools, and see what happens? I think MyFoxMilwaukee is a good step in the right direction.
Seriously, if Journal Communications wants Charlie Sykes, Jessica McBride, and the rest of the gang to be recognized as really-real bloggers they need to give them RSS feeds! My feed reader is the only way that I can manage all the material that I want to go through in the Cheddarsphere, and I’m sure that other blog visitors have the same problem. Come on guys, all the other news outlets are doing it.
Like Sean, I think there ought to be more common folk on the panels. Beyond a handful of the usual suspects (James Wigderson, Sean Hackbarth, Owen Robinson [oops], Jay Bullock) I think that you’d have a hard time finding a blogger who’s ready to take on a panel discussion. But, it wouldn’t hurt Wispolitics to try. I’m flattered that Sean saw fit to mention my name twice as a potential panelist, but I don’t think anyone wants to hear me talk any more than I want to pretend that I have something to say.
I’m not going to the Blog Summit to be talked at, anyhow. I’m going for the social aspect, which is why I like the idea of blog summit in a park much better. I’m hoping that this year’s blog summit will be less like school and more like Drinking Right.

Who is Owen Reynolds?

Whoooops!
He’s a guy I met, a long time ago. I don’t think he’s much of a blogger.

BTW: You have no idea how often I make that mistake mentally.

Me too!

Wendy knew Owen Reynolds too?
Don’t sell yourself short, buddy. This post alone shows what you could add to a blogger summit (If a blog wants me to read them regularly, they MUST have an RSS feed.). Patrick McIlleran has one, why not the rest?

Everyone has to face their first panel discussion at some point. I figure once we overcome the nerves we’d all be OK.

I doubt if I’ll be in town, but I think it would be great to meet you young pups face to face.
Although, I think that picnic type idea is MUCH more interesting. Actual conversation type setting. Just an opinion.

Aaron, you may not want to be on a panel, but it would be nice if WisPolitics asked you. They didn’t. They stuck with the xerox copy of last year. That’s laziness.
