Defining The Generations

January 6th, 2008-9:33 pm by sub2change

I’ve come to the realization that you can identify a generation by its candy, especially by its M&Ms.

My mother is part of the deadly red generation. She used to tell my brothers and I about how there used to be red M&Ms, until someone discovered a health risk with red dye #5.

When I was little, M&Ms were green, yellow, orange, brown, and tan. Sometime before the internet was invented M&Ms enthusiasts voted to add blue and the tan color was dropped. Around the same time the red M&M returned, still sporting its Red #5 coating. I’m not sure how that happened. We also only had peanut and plain M&Ms to choose from.

Now, my son will be growing up with a full color pallate, and he will be able to choose from peanut, plain, almond, and peanut butter. He’ll even be able to customize his selection for a special holiday. He can also go to the candy store to make his own color mix. Best yet, he can replace the “M” with a phrase or image he chooses!

What do you suppose the next generation will bring?

    Next comes “Retro M&M’s”

All of the good old toxic dyes will have been rehabilitated and the insect parts per million will be back at 1963 levels.

The next generation may bring…giant M&M’s with texting phrases!
