Gotta Boast A Little

May 16th, 2008-11:52 pm by sub2change

Some of you like to hear how Cole is doing, others don’t care. Sorry to the latter, because this post is about my son.

Cole is fourteen months old now, but don’t let that fool you. We’re convinced that he’s really advanced for his age. He’s done a really good job of hitting his milestones, except for anything related to his bottle. He refused to hold it on his own for a long time and now that he’s drinking milk we’re fighting him to switch to the sippy cup.

He’s been doing things that catch me totally by surprise now, like walking backwards! He does it to play. I was at Tee Bee’s place the first time I saw him do it. Cole was teasing their dog with a toy and walked backwards all the way across the room! I was totally shocked, but Kelly said he’s been doing it for a while.

Tonight, the boy made me laugh out loud at how clever he can be. He started saying something to me that sounded like babble, “Keekee. Keekee.” I wasn’t really paying attention yet, because I was still cleaning up after him. When he realized that I didn’t recongnize his word he walked over to his diaper bag and picked it up. Then he held it in the air and waved it in front of me. The look on his face said “here’s what I want, asshole.” I fished out his pacifier and handed it to him, hoping that was what he wanted because he already had his blanket. When I told Kelly what he had done she said that he just learned to say “nookie.” We assumed that “keekee” is the same thing.

This is actually the SECOND time that my son has waved something in my face and called me a dumbass. I was putting him in his car seat once, when he reached over and started waving an unopened package of crackers at me. He was shouting at me that time, too, just in case I wasn’t getting the hint.

I don’t know if these things are normal for my son’s age. I don’t have a frame of reference to go by, but he just seems too young to me.

Wow, most of us were into our 30’s and 40’s before we called you those names ;-)

Sorry man, you left that door SO open.

It’s a shame that kids grow so fast, hey?

Well, if the kid already understands “nookie” and is creating new words for it, we’ll have to sign him up at the BBA and have him give Lance a run for his money. Also, you can scratch that “birds & bees” talk off the list. Score!

Well, you’ve got a video for the bees part if you still need that.

I’m not sure there’s a book on personality that will give you an idea of “normal” behavior – personality drives so much of what we are surprised by as well as kids hitting milestones (I think it’s little indicator of development, etc.).

Like Dr. Spock said, you can teach them to do everything except eat, sleep and go to the bathroom.
